BRT PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The proposed BRT service will utilize the existing 40-mile Colorado State Highway 82 (SH 82) corridor between Glenwood Springs and Aspen. SH 82 is owned and maintained by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). The proposed BRT service consists of nine stations, seven of which are located at existing RFTA local or express service stops, two new park and ride lots, and the expansion of one existing park and ride lot. Additionally, as part of transit service priority (TSP) elements, queue jump lanes and signal priority for transit buses will be provided at key intersections. Exclusive ROW for BRT vehicles will be provided through the use of existing High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes from the Town of Basalt to Buttermilk Ski Area and existing bus-only lanes from Buttermilk Ski Area to the Maroon Creek roundabout in the City of Aspen. The proposed BRT project, through nearly a decade of study, emerged as a viable and preferred solution to reduce transit travel times, improve mobility, and enhance transportation capacity in order to reduce congestion on SH 82 in the Roaring Fork Valley.
These transportation goals have been based upon a series of identified deficiencies within the SH 82 corridor, including:
- Existing and forecasted congestion on SH 82 throughout the Valley
- Physical constraints to expanding SH 82 roadway capacity
- Lack of mode choice in the Roaring Fork Valley
- Growth in transit demand
